The Greatest Generals of Ancient Times


1. Alexander, the Great (336-323 b.c.e)


       He was most likely the greatest conqueror of the ancient world. He had the largest kingdom in the ancient world ever recorded. His armies lost very few men in spite of being consistently outnumbered in almost every battle. He never lost a battle. He succeeded his father Phillip II. He spreaded the Hellenic ways which would influence much of the known world. Even today, what he did can be felt.



2. Sun Tzu (544-530 b.c.e)


       A famed Chinese general and writer of the Art of War. The theories in Art of War are studied in many military schools around the world. Also his theories went on to influence business schools and international relations theory. He is considered one of the greatest Chinese generals of all time.




3. Julius Caesar (100-44 b.c.e)



        Transferred Rome from a republic into an empire. Considered one of the greatest rulers Rome has ever seen. He lost very few battles. He was an Egyptian Pharaoh briefly who had a child with Cleopatra. He led the first invasion of Britany with success. He won the Roman civil war over Pompey the Great.




4. Hannibal Barca (247-183 b.c.e)


       He was son of a good general named Hamilcar Barca. He stifled Rome with great military feats even Rome was unable to predict. He gave Rome one of the worst loses of any battle ever recorded in its history. He is considered the greatest African general of all time.





5. Cyrus, the Great (590-530 b.c.e)


       Created the Persian Empire which crushed the Assyrian empire. His empire became one of the largest empires next to Alexander the Great, Rome, Assyria, Parthia, Egypt, and the Seleucid
Empire.





6.Tigleth-pileser III (8th century b.c.e)

       Credited with creating the Neo-Assyrian empire.He ruled and created reforms to the Assyrian military which would go on to rule most of the known world.


7. Surena (84-52 b.c.e)


        One of the greatest threats to Rome next to Hannibal. He was ruler of Parthia which Rome could never truly defeat. The Parthian calvary was the greatest in the known world during Surena's reign.






8. Sargon of the Akkad (2334-2279 b.c.e)



       Won many battles and then united the Sumer and Akkad of Egypt which provided the footwork for future Pharaohs to create even stronger empires.







9. Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus Major (235-183 b.c.e)




        An outstanding military general who used Fabian strategy to defeat Hannibal of Carthage, the greatest threat to Rome at land and sea during that time.






10. Nebuchadrezzar II (605-552 b.c.e)


       Brought the Chaldean people to the height of cultural and militant supremacy. He ruled over the Hebrews and humbled the Cimmerians and Scythians. He created one of the Seven Wonders of the World called the Hanging Gardens of Babylon for his home sick wife.
